Description
Few muscle car stories capture the imagination quite like the Shelby GT350-H — the legendary “Rent-A-Racer” born from an unlikely partnership between Carroll Shelby and the Hertz Corporation. The concept was audacious: take Shelby’s track-bred GT350, add a handful of creature comforts, and offer it to weekend warriors through airport rental counters across America. The result was approximately 1,000 purpose-built Mustangs finished predominantly in Raven Black with gold Le Mans stripes — a livery that has since become one of the most instantly recognizable combinations in all of Shelby lore. Today, authenticated GT350-H examples occupy a hallowed position in the collector car world, valued for their unique backstory, limited production, and undeniable historical significance.
This is chassis 6S1879, confirmed by the Shelby American Automobile Club registry as having been built in April 1966 and delivered new to Hertz finished in its original Raven Black with gold stripes. A recent rotisserie restoration has returned the fastback to concours-level standards, executed in strict accordance with MCA and SAAC guidelines. Extensive originality was discovered throughout the process, with doors, fenders, quarter panels, rocker panels, radiator support, and aprons all bearing March 1966 date stamps. The underbody was finished in correct red oxide primer with period-authentic overspray, and correct fasteners and hardware were used throughout. The 1966-only all-steel hood and chrome Magnum 500 wheels complete an exterior that faithfully recreates the car as it left Shelby American’s Los Angeles facility.
Beneath the hood resides the original, numbers-matching 289 cubic inch Hi-Po K-code V8, with the factory Ford chassis stamping on the inner fender apron matching both the Shelby VIN plate and the engine block itself. A correct Autolite 4100 CZ6F-F four-barrel carburetor sits atop the factory-rated 306-horsepower small-block, which is backed by a date-correct C4 three-speed automatic. Power is delivered through a Ford 9-inch rear end with a limited-slip differential and 3.00 gearing — the proper highway-friendly combination for a car originally intended to be driven hard by weekend renters.
Inside, the correct black vinyl interior is presented with proper materials, trim, and finishes per 1966 Shelby specifications, complete with the factory radio, wood-rimmed steering wheel, and dash-mounted Shelby tachometer. Accompanied by original Shelby American invoice and delivery paperwork and a full SAAC registry listing, this GT350-H stands as a meticulously documented artifact — equally at home on the concours field, in a museum, or anchoring a serious Shelby collection.
