Description
The 1965 Ford Mustang fastback is among the most iconic body styles in American automotive history. Introduced at the 1964 World’s Fair and refined through the first full model year, the Mustang’s long hood and short deck proportions defined a generation of pony cars. The fastback roofline — added to the lineup for 1965 — brought a sleeker, more purposeful silhouette that appealed directly to performance-minded buyers and has only grown more desirable in the decades since. First-generation Mustang fastbacks remain the benchmark of the segment, consistently commanding strong collector interest for their combination of timeless styling and endless performance potential.
This example has undergone a professional ground-up restoration and presents in Ford Laser Red two-stage with Pearl Shelby top stripes and a pinned Shelby-style hood. Emblems have been cleanly shaved with the exception of a bright pony insignia on the mesh grille, giving the car a tastefully streamlined appearance. The 302 cubic inch V8 was professionally assembled by VanGordon Performance, featuring Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, a Holley Street Avenger four-barrel on an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake, forged Speed Pro pistons, a balanced nodular crank, and a Comp hydraulic cam. Coated Tri-Y headers and a clean Satin Black engine bay round out a build that is as visually impressive as it is mechanically sorted.
Power is transmitted through a Tremec T5 5-speed sourced from D&D Performance, feeding a Bill Thomas Enterprises 9-inch rear axle with 3.50 gears, 28-spline axles, and Traction-Lok differential. The suspension has been upgraded with a 1-inch sway bar, KYB shocks, and revised spring rates front and rear, supported by modern power steering and an upgraded dual-circuit braking system with 11-inch slotted SSBC rotors up front. California Pony Cars 17-inch alloys wearing Continental and General performance tires complete the rolling package with a purposeful, period-correct stance.
Inside, TMI seats with red-stitched Pony covers anchor a black interior that balances restored factory character with thoughtful upgrades — rebuilt factory telemetry, Auto Meter accessory gauges, a Scott Drake Rally Pac, direct-fit audio, and Kicker door speakers. A Grant steering wheel, polished shifter, and stainless-trimmed foot pedals complete a cockpit that rewards the driver without overstepping the Mustang’s original character. This is a fastback that looks right, drives right, and represents exactly what a well-executed first-generation Mustang restoration should be.
